An electric car with gasoline engine giving us the best of both worlds

The Nissan Leaf is the most popular electric car in the world, but the aspirations of the Japanese manufacturer go further. Another of the best-known models is the Qashqai, the best-selling SUV in Spain and Europe.

The latest version we have is that of 2017, where aesthetic changes and ProPilot technology were introduced to improve the suspension. But it is already a renovation and Nissan has confirmed some of the characteristics of its third generation.

Planned for 2021, the future Nissan Qashqai will be an extended-range electric car with Nissan’s e-Power system. A type of electric car powered by a gasoline engine, a hybrid system that already triumphs in Japan and Nissan can export to Europe with many possibilities to repeat the success of the current Qashqai.

Specifically, the Qashqai would have a new generation e-Power system, with two electric motors and a power of 340 hp. The torque would be 700 Nm, with all-wheel drive and would be equipped with a gasoline engine to act as a generator.

The system is not exactly new since in Japan it is marketed with the Nissan NoteThese types of vehicles are known as series or electric hybrids with extended autonomy. It basically consists of electric cars but they have a gasoline engine that works constantly. An alternative to rechargeable hybrids or plug-in hybrids.

Roel de Vries, corporate vice president of Nissan Motor Company, confirmed in a statement that the future Qashqai will have this technology: “With the arrival of e-POWER to European roads in the next two years, we will bring the benefits of our Nissan Intelligent vision Mobility to more customers and we will continue to move people towards a better world “If it is electric, why do you use a gasoline engine?

It may seem like a contradiction, but it is a system that gathers some advantages of both worlds. The consumption is lower and is a solution to reduce the levels of CO₂ and NOx, but also does not require a plug to recharge the battery.

Nissan is not the only manufacturer that opts for this technology, as other brands such as Mazda or LEVC have shown some electric models with extended autonomy. In the case of Nissan, the e-Power system is characterized by having a gasoline engine that acts as a generator, this is associated with a 1.5 kWh battery and then we have two electric motors that move the wheels.
