Diversity of Styles to Write Content for Websites in 2020

The digital domain is overloaded with websites that present information on almost all possible topics. Writing is an important method to inform others about something, share personal experience, or just persuade readers to accept your point of view.

Writing for the web may seem to be a rather simple task, but any author is always required to mind the purpose of his or her work and adapt to it. Different websites and tasks presuppose distinctive styles. In this text, we will describe the most popular writing style types that can be found on diverse online resources and present examples of their use.

    1. Expository Style

It is a style of writing where an author primarily relies on facts and figures while trying to be as objective as possible. Traditionally, you will not find the author’s personal opinions or evaluations of the presented information.

The expository text offers pure web content, while all evaluations are left to the reader. Often, expository writing aims to teach you something. It explains relevant topics or provides you with instructions on how to install software on your computer, train your muscles properly, or how to use a medication.

In general, the expository approach can apply to all possible activities that require guidance or presentation of facts.

    2. Persuasive Style

One of the most popular writing style types that can be found on the Internet is a persuasive approach. It aims to motivate the reader to buy a specific product, refer to a particular service, or accept a viewpoint.

Traditionally, this type of writing is associated with marketing, but persuasive texts may also address social problems, such as cultural diversity topics. In a diversity essay, the author tries to present his or her viewpoint to the reader and make the receiver accept it.

It does not necessarily mean that after reading such a text, you will start thinking of the described topic in the same way as an author. Persuasive value of such works relies on the writer’s skills, the receiver’s background, and lots of subjective or individual factors.

The most important point of a persuasive text is an attempt to persuade the reader with the help of logical and emotional appeals and supported with arguments opinions.

    3. Critical Style

It is important to mention combinations of expository and persuasive approaches. You may find such a style in academic texts based on the author’s critical thinking skills. For example, lots of students have to submit works on cultural diversity research paper topics.

Such texts focus on African Americans before becoming free, segregation, racism, cultural competence. Their notable feature is that after presenting objective information, an author explains his or her personal opinion and tries to persuade the reader to accept it.

A bigger set of objective information presented in such a text is what differs it from mere persuasive works. Such texts can often be found on the Internet. Their authors may write them to assist students or merely explain their opinions on social or historical problems.

    4. Descriptive Style

This type of writing is not very frequent in the digital domain. The primary point of descriptive texts is, unsurprisingly, to describe something. It may be a description of an artwork, a product, a building, or a mere landscape.

The most important point about this approach is that the author remains neutral and does not try to persuade you, as a reader, to accept his or her viewpoint. Surely, the descriptive method may contain implicit logical appeals, but its neutrality is an important feature that differs descriptive writing from persuasive texts.

Descriptive texts may be found on diverse art-related resources, blogs, or websites dedicated to reviews.

    5. Narrative Style

In this type of writing, the author aims to explain the events that have occurred to him or her. Such information is presented in the form of a narrative with a logical sequence of events and the author’s comments about them.

This type of web content is subjective and often may include persuasive messages. Sometimes, a narrative text is just the author’s attempt to share his or her interesting experience with you. You may find such texts in various travel blogs or websites where people share their most dramatic stories from real life.

In lots of cases, it is difficult to distinguish narrative writing from persuasive writing since both types of texts present subjective opinions and tend to appeal to your emotions.

There exists a variety of styles that are used in web content writing according to types of online resources and texts’ purposes. In this text, we have discussed the most common types of web writing style types, namely expository writing, persuasive writing, critical writing, descriptive writing, narrative writing.

Bear in mind that it is not a constant set of writing styles because they can continuously merge and appear. The enumerated writing styles are only the most popular ones and the most important for everyone who wants to try oneself in web content writing.
