Exploring the Thrills and Challenges of Minecraft Prison Servers

If movies and TV shows have taught us anything, it is that people love a good prison break story. The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most popular movies of all time. Prison Break, the show, was a smash hit. And it isn’t just confined to these two mediums either. The realm of video games lends itself fantastically well to prison break scenarios.

Some of the best games out there are based around the prison. The Escapists invites you to escape from a variety of different prisons in increasingly creative ways. The prison architect asks you to flip the script and instead create and manage a prison. But one of my favorite prison games out there isn’t actually a full game but rather is a popular custom mode for Minecraft. I am of course talking about Prison Mode.

Minecraft Prison Mode

There is a lot of debate within the Minecraft community about who created the original Prison mode. But it has been around for nearly as long as Minecraft has been out. And it has been one of the most popular game modes ever since its release.

Prison mode is, as you might expect, set in a prison. When you first join the game you will be put in the lowest-ranked cell block in the prison. The place is reserved for the lowest of the low. But there is hope. If you play your cards right, work hard, and please the right people you could end up escaping!

To move up the ranks you need money. There are a number of ways to earn money in Prison mode. The simplest is to attend your mandatory job mining for the ore which you can then sell back to the prison. But you can also earn money by selling items directly to other players.

Each rank costs more money to move up to than the last. But eventually, you will hit the ‘Freedom’ rank and will have officially escaped the prison. But this doesn’t mean you have to stop playing. At this point, you can enjoy the social aspect of the prison without any of the work.

Hidden around the prison and in the mines, you can find contraband items and weapons. You can also craft different items if you have the right resources. But you need to be careful. A lot of Prison servers have PvP included. Other players can kill you for your resources. But this is where the guards come into play.

The Guards

Minecraft Prison servers

Every prison needs guards. And Minecraft prisons are no exception. Not every Prison server will have guards, but those that do are well worth checking out. Guards function just like they would in a normal prison. They have to keep the peace by ensuring players are adhering to the prison rules.

It’s important to note that the prison rules aren’t the same as the server rules. The prison rules include ‘no contraband’ or ‘no fighting other inmates.’ But as any good prisoner knows, rules are meant to be broken. This creates a good back-and-forth between the guards and the prisoners. But guards aren’t always the most honest people either. Prisoners can also trade with the guards, encouraging some dodgy dealings on the side.

The Multiplayer Experience

Minecraft Prison mod

The prison was designed as a multiplayer mode, so we don’t recommend playing it single-player as you will be missing out on most of the key features and experiences that make the way so much fun. Luckily for you, there are hundreds of great minecraft prison servers for you to choose from.

There are a lot of different variations of the Prison map. Most servers run different ones so you’re always sure to have a new experience when you server hop. Different servers often have various plugins installed as well to help with moderation purposes and to enhance the gameplay experience.

The best thing about Prison mode is that it is as much a social experience as much as a gameplay one. Many Prison servers function more like a chat room than anything else. The setting is designed to bring people together by forcing them into shared cells and making them work shifts together.
